Assessment of Environmental Literacy among Preparatory School Students in Alexandria Governorate

Abstract

Background: Achieving a healthy environment is crucial for helping people live
longer and for enhancing their quality of life. Young generations who are aware of
the environmental issues threat on their lives and on the globe become more
concerned about how to protect their environment and act in an environmentally
conscious way. Therefore environmental education is one of the most effective ways
to meet the complex environmental problems and eliminate environmental
illiteracy. Objective: To assess knowledge and perception regarding different
environmental issues among preparatory school students in Alexandria
governorate. Settings: The study was carried out in four governmental preparatory
schools representing El-Montazah (1) and East educational zones in Alexandria
Governorate. Subjects: Systematic random sample of 400 students in the first and
second grades in the previously mentioned settings by using the proportional
allocation method. Tools: two tools were used. Tool (I): Students' Knowledge
Regarding Environmental Issues Structured Questionnaire Sheet, Tool (II):
Students’ Perception towards Environmental Issues Scale. Results: Less than three
quarters (71.3%) of the students had good knowledge regarding environmental
issues. While, less than one fifth (17.3%) of them had poor knowledge and the rest
(11.5%) had fair knowledge. In addition, the vast majority (93%) of the students
had good perception toward environmental issues. there is statistically significant
relation between students' sex, residence, academic grade, parents' education and
students' attendance of previous environmental workshops& seminars with their
level of knowledge about environmental issues. Conclusion: there are good
knowledge and perception level among preparatory school students in Alexandria
governorate regarding number of global and emerging environmental problems.
Recommendations: Integrate of global environmental problems in formal
education. Provide teachers with ongoing training on environmental education
methods, Develop short messages through mass media about the global
environmental problems. Conduct public environmental education campaigns.
