Abstract

Background: Aromatherapy massage is one of the popular types of CAM, which is
used for the management of primary dysmenorrhea through the use of essential oils
separately or in combination with massage. Objective: This study aims to evaluate
the effect of abdominal massage with essential oils mixture on pain among nursing
students with primary dysmenorrhea. Materials and Method: A quasi-experimental
research design was utilized at Faculty of Nursing affiliated to Alexandria
University. A convenient sample of 80 female nursing students enrolled in the 2nd &
the 3rd academic years 2021/2022 and meeting the inclusion criteria was recruited
in the study. They were equally assigned (40 female nursing students) to either
study or control group. The study group received abdominal massage with essential
oils mixture, while the control group received abdominal massage with placebo
(sweet almond oil). Collection of data covered a period of 4 months, 4 days/week.
Results: both the study and the control groups were almost similar in all of their
socio-demographic data, and menstrual history, where the relationship between
them was not statistically significant. However, high significant reduction of
menstrual pain was observed among the study group after the 1st & the 2nd
intervention, compared to the control group. Conclusion: Abdominal massage
with essential oils mixture for nursing students with primary dysmenorrhea was
highly significantly effective in reducing the intensity of menstrual pain.
Recommendations: Aromatherapy abdominal massage with essential oils mixture
can be used by nurses for the treatment of primary dysmenorrhea because it is safe,
effective, and easy to apply and has no side effects. Educational program should be
initiated for adolescent girls with primary dysmenorrhea about effects, benefits and
utilization of abdominal massage with essential oils mixture, using a multitude of
audiovisual materials.
